[Bookbinder's Tickets] 1) In black ink on cream paper, the ticket consists of an escutcheon with an elaborate base, bearing the name, services, and location of the company. A diadem bears the crest of a Gryphon salient armed, gules, holding an escutcheon Argent, a garter, gules. The escutcheon is surrounded by smoke-like dark shading and the whole is surrounded by a thin black border. 2) In black ink on light blue or gray paper, the ticket consists of an elaborate coin or medallion with trefoils in the four corners, bearing the name and services of the company. An escutcheon in the center of the medallion bears the address of the business. The blunted corners of the ticket result in an octagonal shape. 2. [Bookplate by Colonist Lithography] In black ink on cream paper. The top center contains the coat of arms, flanked by elaborate leafy scrollwork. In the center is text in multiple bold fonts identifying the book number and library number (with gray rectangles where these numbers were handwritten). The bottom third contains the small text rules. Surrounding everything are two thin borders, between which, on the bottom edge, is the name of the lithographer. 3. [Bookplate by W. Bowles and J.W. Leigh] This bookplate is rendered in a circular motif, with three escutcheons pivoting the centre. The first crest is gules (red), charged with three ducal coronet, positioned two over one, with a roundlet or (gold) at centre. The second crest has a chevronelly of eleven or and azure (blue). The third crest is gules, charged with three inverted wildcat heads on fleur-de-lis, two over one. The entire assemblage is contained within a circular pattern, with Latin name in the border. The original artist of the crest is J.W. Leigh, indicated by "Inv." at the base of the design. 4. [Bookplate for Alexander Millar] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a curved crest wreath and dexter cubit arm, holding an open faced book. Above the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 5. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 6. [Bookplate for Arnold William Thomas] In black ink on white paper. Shield: Or (gold), on a fesse dancette sable (black), coticed gules (red), between three birds sable perched, addorsed and elevated. Crest: a bird sable perched, addorsed and elevated, atop an open book argent (silver) and a crest wreath, argent and vert (green) with mantling. 7. [Bookplate for Arthur Phelips Hoskyns] In black ink, this bookplate contains a crest with dexter rooster's head, erased or (gold), comb and wattle gules (red), and three roundlets pellet (black) on neck. 8. [Bookplate for Arthur Richard Springett] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield or escutcheon Gules (red) party per fess wavy with three crescents, two over one, Argent (silver). The closed, barred helm in profile toward the dexter half bears a crest of a displayed eagle upon a nowed snake in a figure eight and a straight wreath. The helm is surrounded by mantling. Below the escutcheon, a banner bears the motto 'MEMOR ET FIDELIS' [Latin: Mindful and Faithful]. 9. [Bookplate for Augustus Langdon] This heraldic bookplate is printed on medium weight green paper and consists of a straight wreath charged with a cubit arm of a beast clutching a battle axe. Around the crest is a garter, with latin motto within. 10. [Bookplate for Bateman by Orlando Jewitt] This bookplate consists of an or (gold) escutcheon, on which are three etoile topped crescents, two over one. There is also an additional smaller crescent located at the precise middle chief of the escutcheon. According to heraldic symbolism, the crescent represents the second son. On top of the shield is a helmet in profile, beaver open. Atop the helmet is a curved crest wreath and another etoile topped crescent. The crest also includes a vol (set of wings), erect, and mantling which pours down the sides of the shield. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. The image and text are framed by a thin single line border. 11. [Bookplate for Benjamin Gott] In black ink. Escutcheon inside a garter on which is the Latin motto. Inescutcheon parted per bend, argent [white], charged with two roses on either side of a lion, passant ; coticed, argent, and charged with three tufts of ermine each, sable [black].Two layer bordure, countercharged, argent and sable. Above the escutcheon is a curved crest wreath on which is a demi-gryphon, displayed. 12. [Bookplate for Benjamin Morris] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with two identical swords, crossed at the fess point, and a sheaf or garb of wheat located at the nombril point. The escutcheon has a decorative bordure, and is crested by a dexter helmet, closed, with elaborate mantling flowing outward from either side. Above the helmet is a curved crest wreath and a "savage" head and bust. In heraldry, the "savage" is a symbol of wildness and purity. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 13. [Bookplate for Blythe Eagles by A. W.] Armorial bookplate created with black ink on white paper. In the precise middle chief is an eagle (created in a First Nations' design) clutching a fish. A purpure chevron with three dogwood flowers is also portrayed. Three university shields are featured: University of Toronto (dexter chief), Yale University (sinister chief), University of British Columbia (nombril point). Below the University of British Columbia's crest are two aulns (single pieces of wheat). 14. [Bookplate for Caleb Whitehorn by William Henshaw] In black ink. Decorative escutcheon parted per chevron, fleury-counterfleury, argent (silver) and sable (black), one escallop. Above chevron, argent, with two towers, sable. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with five spears, entwined. Escutcheon surrounded with flowered mantling. 15. [Bookplate for Charles Bathurst] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale. The dexter side, sable (black), contains two bars, ermine (design representing white powdered fur with black tufts). At the centre of the top bar there is a crescent, or (gold), within a mullet, gules (red). On the top third of the sable background are three cross formy, or. The sinister side is itself divided per pale, ermine and ermines (design representing black fur powdered with argent [silver]). It contains three fleurs-de-lis all counter-changed, two over one, and contains a chevron charged with five lozenges, ermine and ermines all counter-changed. Atop the shield, but not resting on it, is a straight crest wreath and an arm embowed, with fist clenched holding a spiked club. The arm is charged with a crescent, or , within a mullet, gules. 16. [Bookplate for Charles Felix Aylwin] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per fess, barry nebuly of three, argent [white] and gules [red]. Three lions, rampant, sable [black], two over one. Above the escutcheon is mantling, on which sits a curved crest wreath and a paw, erased, sable, within a Mural crown proper. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 17. [Bookplate for Charles Gery Milnes] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly, and contains an inescutcheon at the fess point. The first and fourth quadrants of the escutcheon, azure (blue), contain a chevron, argent (silver), charged with three millrinds. The first quadrant differs from the fourth in that only two millrinds are visible, as one is covered by the inescutcheon, and it contains a canton at the dexter chief, or (gold), charged with a trefoil, sable (black). The second and third quadrants, gules (red), are charged with three lion heads, two over one, and contain a fess, argent and engrailed, charged with two escallopes, azure. The inescutcheon, gules, contains two bars, argent, charged with three mascles (open faced lozenge) each, gules ; and a canton at the dexter chief, or, charged with a roundlet, hurts (azure). The escutcheon's crest is a straight wreath, topped by a ducal coronet and an elephants head, dexter and erased, with tusks. 18. [Bookplate for Charles Theodore Hart] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features the head of a stag in profile on a crest-wreath. The shield is pointed at the top left, top right, and bottom corners. The bottom of the shield curves to a central point. The shield is argent with a sable chevron charged with two stars on the top left and top right sides. The stars are white with black shading and a black circle in the center. Below the chevron the shield is charged with a springing stag. Below the shield the motto is printed on a ribbon in capitalized, serif font. Underneath the motto is the bookplate owner’s name in curling, italicized font. 19. [Bookplate for Christopher Tower] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon sable (black), a tower with two windows. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with a gryphon, passant. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the English motto. 20. [Bookplate for City of Halifax and Citizens’ Free Library] Black ink on cream paper. A coat of arms for the city of Halifax is printed in the upper-portion of the plate. Within this coat of arms stands a sailor on the left, with his hand placed on the crest containing a Belted Kingfisher on a grassy mound. Directly above the crest is a masoned Sable containing a sprig of mayflower. To the right is a fisherman holding a codfish by its head. Both figures and the crest are standing upon heraldic ribbon containing Latin phrasing within it. This portion is followed by the title of the library and three sections with horizontal dotted entries lines for entering the class, book, and accession number.
